The ideas behind this lesson

What is Gemini?

Gemini is Google’s AI assistant. You type a request and it generates a response. It can explain a topic, suggest ideas and help write a first draft. You do not need technical language. A request you type is often called a prompt. Gemini can make mistakes, so you still need to review what it gives you.

Opening Gemini

Open your browser and go to gemini.google.com. Sign in if prompted. Some basic features may work without signing in; others need an eligible Google Account. If you use a work or school account, access may depend on your organisation. This lesson uses only the basic text conversation.

Your first question

Click the text box, type the question and submit it. The question used in the video:

“Explain what a computer folder is in plain English. Use one everyday example.”

Your answer may be different from the one in the video, even with the same question. Read for the main idea. Does the example make the explanation easier to understand?

A follow-up question

A follow-up is simply another request in the same conversation. You do not need to repeat the whole first question.

“Make that shorter. Give me one sentence and one example.”

Compare the two answers. Which would be easier for a beginner to understand? If the wording still feels complicated, ask Gemini to use simpler words.

A new topic needs a new chat

New chat starts a separate conversation, which keeps different topics apart. If you cannot see it, you may need to open the menu first. The new topic tried in the video:

“Suggest a 15-minute practice plan for learning basic Excel.”

Check whether the plan is realistic for a beginner, then adjust it to suit your time and experience.

Which answer needs checking?

A quick question from the lesson. Think about it before you read on.

Gemini gives you…
AA list of possible lesson titles
BA statement about today’s interest rate

B needs a reliable source. It is a current factual claim, so check it against an official source before using it. A still needs your judgement: does the title suit your audience? Gemini can sound confident even when it makes a mistake.

A few simple rules

Your first Gemini practice

  1. Choose something simple you want to understand, and ask Gemini to explain it.
  2. Try one follow-up if you need a clearer answer.
  3. Review the answer before using it.

You do not need to explore every feature today. One question, one follow-up, and a careful read of the answer is enough for a first session.
