What this series is
Official economic figures — interest rates, inflation, jobs, government budgets — usually arrive as a single number in a headline. This series slows that down. Each video starts from a published figure and shows how to read it: what it measures, what period it covers, and what it can and cannot tell you.
Latest: why interest rates matter for government debt — a short look at how the cash rate has moved since 2020 and why the government's interest bill changes gradually rather than overnight. A full explainer on government debt and interest rates is on the way.
Lessons with written notes
This lesson has its own page with the figures, the dates they cover, and the sources listed — including updates for the September 2026 RBA decision.
Newer videos in the playlist above appear here on the site automatically, as soon as they are published on YouTube.
About the figures in these videos. Every figure is dated, and none of them is a forecast. If you are watching later, look the current figures up on abs.gov.au and rba.gov.au. The method is the lesson, not the numbers.
